CBT for Trauma and PTSD

Online across the UK | In-person sessions offered in Doncaster, South Yorkshire

Experiencing one or more traumatic events can affect how safe you feel in the world even long after the event has passed. You may notice distressing memories, nightmares, strong emotional reactions to various situations, memories and thoughts, avoiding things that remind you of what happened and feelings of being on high alert (for example, being easily startled and jumpy, on edge).

CBT for trauma and PTSD can help you process what has happened, reduce its ongoing impact on your life, and help you live a more fulfilled life in a way you would like to.

Common experiences you might notice after one or more traumatic events

  • Intrusive, unwanted memories
  • Nightmares
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Feelings of anger
  • Feeling on edge, on high alert or being easily startled and jumpy
  • Avoiding anything that reminds you of what happened (this could be people, places, objects, situations, memories, feelings, smells, tastes, sights etc.)
  • Feeling emotionally numb, or disconnected from others and the world around you
  • Strong physical reactions to any reminders of what happened
  • Emotions such as guilt, shame, self-blame, self-doubt, anger and more

How CBT can help with trauma and PTSD

CBT can help to gently guide you to understand and change patterns that keep distress going. This might include:

  • Understanding how trauma and PTSD affect the mind and body
  • Identifying triggers and responses to them
  • Looking at avoidance and how this may impact emotions
  • Processing the trauma in a safe, supported way, in a safe environment
  • Rebuilding a sense of safety, control, self-compassion, self-love and more

We will always go at a pace that you are comfortable with, and that is collaborative and supportive in the right way for you. It will always be guided by what is manageable for you.

What therapy might look like

  2. We will build safety and stability first
  3. We will gradually work through thoughts and responses based upon what you would like to focus upon
  4. We will focus upon gradually rebuilding your confidence and your daily life to where you would like it to be
